Hard times hit everyone not just the disenfranchised. If you could collect enough recyclables for a tank of gas why not. It also reduces the carbon footprint of both of you. A solution might be that you pull out the recyclables and put them in a bag on a different night of the week, so that some real determined and maybe someone in more need could pick them up. Or you could donate them to a favorite charity.

There are many more things you could do with them, these are just a few suggestions.

What would bother me is something going through stuff on my property, no matter what it was. And of course, while they're helping themselves to a few bottles and cans, they might just take a peek at the unshredded receipt or bill copy...

I haven't seen anyone taking recyclables from our bins, probably because I only put the non-nickel ones at the street, and save up - for months - the cans to take to Safeway, where I will often just leave a grocery bag's worth by the machines for some more interested person to cash in.

But, from time to time some party person has left a six-pack of Pabst or Michelob beside my bins, which wouldn't bother me - maybe where they live they don't have curbside pickup - but jeez, do they have to drink crappy domestic? I mean, I've got my image to protect!

Yeah, the parking lot thing gets me too - I mean, why do people have to cross the driving area diagonally, so that it takes them longer to get out of the way? Walk straight across, and then walk parallel to the flow of traffic. I know that physics/geometry show that the diagonal distance is actually shorter than the two 90-degree legs, but really - how much farther is it?

Thanks for speaking my thoughts on this exactly! I see it in parking lots too (especially Safeway for some reason). My take on it is that people either think they're immortal or have a subconscious death wish. I mean, they wouldn't actually say "I want to get run over and die today" but something deep inside is making them take the chance. I don't get it either. I've always believed you should get the heck out of the way, cuz you should NEVER assume a car has your best interests or well-being at heart (they DON'T!).

"Normal" - what a concept! (Sounds like Robin Williams, doesn't it?) We're all living in altered states of one kind or another. Some are more bearable than others. (I'm not quoting anybody, but doesn't that sound like something almost deep? ;-)

I just caught up on your last few posts - things are looking good! I like the new blog design, nice and bright. I prefer reason #3 - saving black pixels. Sounds like something Dilbert's boss might think up...

Cute pet pics too.

Hi Julie,

You have every right to feel the way that you do! It is okay to be sad, mad, depressed, angry, disillusioned, and totally drained. These are not good feelings but perhaps these are the best way your physical/psychological/spiritual "self" can cope with all that you have been going through! I would like to say this (and you can take it or leave it): You won't feel this way forever, it will change! Look at what you have done so far...you are a SURVIVOR and you are doing the absolute best that anyone could possibly do with all of this stuff. This has been and is a MAJOR change in your life, a PIVOTAL time.

Wendy is correct, when I read your writings I see a positive, strong, and courageous person. Give yourself permission to work through it all and to actually "feel" these feelings! Looking back at this time may help you to determine the tremendous and rewarding feelings of accomplishment and love that you will feel for yourself, because the negative or hurtful feelings (which are valid and okay) will not last forever. They will be replaced with different feelings, perhaps ones that will help you to feel powerful, encouraged, and self-assured.

I admire you, and I see a new season of life for you. Yes, it is different, and it has not been pleasant, but it will not be this way forever, as I mentioned above- it will change. The only constant in this life is change. Ironic, huh?

Take care of yourself first and foremost, reach out when you need to, and give all of the people in your life permission to learn too! This has all been very different and not pleasant for so many who care for you. That (they) will change too!!

I am happy that I know you and I admire you.

Hi Julie,
I hate to hear you feeling so sad. I'm sure it's normal to feel that way, but know that all of us here at the office are thinking about you. People ask me all the time how you are doing, and I always tell them how positive you have been throughout everything. That is a great strength that you have! If only all of us could be as brave as you. Take it easy so you can get yourself back here!!
Best, Wendy

Let's hear if for normal...and boring. I wish you many days of normal and boring. You deserve it after the long, hard fight you've had. I marvel at you and your grace under strain. You go girl!
We're thinking about you and sending good 'get well' vibes. Greg, Jeanette, and Emmy Rose.
